Knit a hat
As an introduction to knit with multicoloured yarn, I have designed some hats, which I hope will show the idea and possibilities of the yarn.
For these designs I have used Kauni effect yarn and in the pattern I refer to the Kauni colours next to the pictures.
A little about the hats:
I have designed 3 types of hats, all knitted with 2 colour patterns.
- a geometric design (the squares)
- an organic design ( flowers and leaves)
- a traditional design (Norwegian star)
For a small project, as a hat, the colours don’t change very much, but hopefully it will illustrate what happens, when working with the colours.
Please look at the hat, as an extended swatch. Of course it would be nice to knit a perfect hat, which fits you, has the right colours, and is just what you have always wished for, but when knitting with this kind of yarn, you can never be 100% sure of the result. At the same time, this is the challenging and exciting thing about knitting with this yarn. I have often experienced that is when the colours nearly are too much, too closely or just not beautiful, the most interesting things happen.
At the last pages are charts without motifs, where you have possibility designing hats with your own motifs.
Yarn supply for a hat is about 50 g of each of the two colours.
Circular needles size 2½ - 3 – 3½ mm - 40 cm (due to the design you want to knit)
and double pointed needles size 3 and 3½ mm (for knitting the crown of the hat).
Notice if you want to change something in the pattern before starting (size, tension, borders etc.).
You can combine the different borders to the different hat patterns as you want.
